Algeria steps up forest fire prevention and control

Given the growing threat of forest fires, exacerbated by a sharp rise in temperatures during the summer of 2025, the Algerian government has introduced new measures to intensify the prevention and fight against this scourge.

Key initiatives include the mobilization of 20 000 Civil Protection agents to intervene in the event of wildfires, the deployment of 55 aircraft and helicopters, and the chartering of 12 additional planes to enhance firefighting capacity. Drones and other specialized equipment will also be employed to more effectively identify and target affected areas.

Beyond these immediate actions, Algeria is rolling out a broader strategy that involves creating firebreaks to prevent the spread of flames, establishing landing zones to enable rapid aerial intervention, installing water points, and clearing dry vegetation in forested areas.
