The French Road Safety Observatory (ONISR) has published the final road safety figures in France for the year 2024.
Over the past year, 3 432 people lost their lives on French roads (including mainland France and overseas territories), representing a 1% increase compared to 2023 and a 2.9% decrease compared to 2019 (the reference year).
Metropolitan France recorded 3 193 deaths, including 2 465 men and 728 women. The number of injuries is estimated at 236 000.
Out of the 3 193 fatalities in metropolitan France, 2 019 died in accidents they caused, while the remaining 1 174 were not responsible for the crashes.
In the French overseas territories, 239 people lost their lives.
Excessive and inappropriate speed, as well as driving under the influence of alcohol remain the two leading causes of fatal road accidents.
