On 7 January 2025, the Himalayan region of Tibet, located in southwest China, was hit by an earthquake of magnitude 6.8 according to the Chinese authorities and 7.1 according to the US Geological Survey (USGS).
The quake struck Tingri county, a high-altitude area with nearly 62 000 inhabitants.
The tremor was felt as far away as Nepal's capital, Kathmandu.
The preliminary toll reports at least 95 dead people and 130 injured. The natural disaster also caused the collapse of several buildings.
