A series of unprecedented wildfires has engulfed the city of Los Angeles since 7 January 2024. 24 deaths have been confirmed so far, with more than 12 000 buildings completely destroyed.
Firefighters are currently battling six wildfires, fueled by high winds combined with extreme drought conditions. More than 130 000 people have been forced to evacuate.
The first fire, the “Palisades Fire”, broke out on the morning of 7 January in the Pacific Palisades, a neighborhood that is home to several Hollywood celebrities. The fire destroyed more than 6 000 hectares.
After the San Fernando Valley and Altadena, the Sunset Fire swept across the Hollywood Hills, not far from the Walk of Fame.
According to experts, these catastrophic conditions are likely to persist until the end of the week.
