Mediterranean: record heat and warming waters

Mediterranean warmingAt the end of June 2025, the Mediterranean Sea experienced exceptionally high temperatures, exceeding 30°C, which represents a record for the month of June.

The average sea surface temperature reached 26.04°C, around 2°C above the norm recorded between 1991 and 2020. In some areas, the anomaly rose to as much as +5°C compared to the average over the past decade.

On 1 July 2025, a notable peak was recorded in the Balearic Islands, where water temperatures climbed to 30.99°C.

The Mediterranean basin is warming 13% faster than the global average (+1.54°C).

The impacts of climate change are becoming increasingly evident across the region, amplified by the growing population in densely urbanized coastal areas.
